Can You Repaint an Asgard Shed?
It's a question we get asked fairly often: "Can I repaint my Asgard shed?"

The short answer? Technically yes, but you won't be able to recreate the finish of the original. Let us explain why.

Why our paint finish is different
All Asgard sheds are made from galvanised steel and finished with powder-coated exterior quality paint. This isn't your standard DIY shed paint - it's industrial-grade stuff that's applied in our factory using specialist equipment.



The paint is UV protected, which means the sun won't bleach or fade the colour. It's also incredibly durable and designed to bond properly with the galvanised steel surface. That combination is what gives our sheds their long-lasting finish.

What about repainting yourself?
We've had customers try repainting using standard gloss paint and rollers. According to Alan, our paint plant team leader, it can look good initially - for about a year. Then the problems start.

"Standard paints don't have the adhesion to stick to our already painted sheds," Alan explains. "The other issue is that our paint is UV protected, so the sun won't bleach the colour. Domestic off-the-shelf paint will fade or discolour in the sunlight."

There are specialist paint suppliers out there that can provide paint for the job, but it's costly and aimed at bulk buying trade like ourselves. It often requires specialist tools too.

A few years ago, we had a local graffiti artist repaint one of our sheds for charity using specialist cellulose paints (a type of car paint). He prepped and sealed it first, and it still looked brilliant years later. The catch? He turned up with over 20 cans at £25 each - and that was back in 2016.

Can't you just sand it down first?
Not really, no. Our sheds are galvanised - that's a dipping process that coats the raw steel in a rust-preventive coating. If you sand or scratch the surface, you'll remove this protective layer and risk rust forming underneath any new paint.

What the paint manufacturer says
We spoke to our paint supplier about this. Here's what they told us:

"The evolution of exterior powder coatings means that they are becoming tougher and more durable. Customer expectations are for powder coatings to deliver a higher design life with better long-term colour and gloss retention. Unfortunately, this means that they become more difficult to repair or re-paint with liquid."

What about small scratches and touch-ups?

We sell touch-up paint in aerosol form specifically for Asgard sheds. It's the same 800 Series twin-pack paint we use in the factory, activated by a curing agent. It's a non-isocyanate coating, so it's free from toxic hazards, though you should still use it in well-ventilated areas.

This is perfect for dealing with minor damage from moving the shed, accidental knocks, or general wear and tear over the years.

The bottom line
A full, high-quality repaint of an existing Asgard shed isn't realistic as a DIY job at a sensible price. You could do it with very expensive specialist paints or pay a professional to respray panel by panel, but that's going to cost you.
