Repainting an Asgard Shed

Repainting an Asgard shed.

Asgard sheds are tough and secure, Our units are made from Galvanised (weatherproof steel) and covered in powder-coated external quality paint.  A common question is, can I repaint my Asgard shed??

Technically, yes, but you won't be able to recreate the high-quality finish of the original.

From Alan, Our paint plant team leader.

We have had a customer repaint an Asgard shed using gloss paint on rollers. This finish looks good …. for around a year, but that’s about it, standard paints don’t have the adhesion to stick to our already painted sheds.  The other issue, of course, is that our paint is UV protected, so the sun won’t bleach the colour (fade).  Domestic “off-the-shelf” paint will fade or discolour in the sunlight. There are a number of specialist paint suppliers out there that will supply paint for the job, but this paint is costly and is aimed at bulk buying trade, such as ourselves, and will often require specialist tools.  A few years ago, we had a local graffiti artist repaint one of our sheds for charity. He used specialist cellulose paints after prepping and sealing, and that still looks good (it was type of car paint), but that will be expensive for an average person to do, as he had 20 plus cans with him, at the time his cans were £25 each and that was back in 2016

Can I sand the shed down to help the paint stick to the shed?

Not really. Our sheds are galvanised; that’s a dipping process that coats the raw steel in a rust-preventive coating, so scratching the surface will remove this protective coating, and then risk rust.

What does the paint manufacturer say?

“The evolution of exterior powder coatings means that they are becoming tougher and more durable.  Customer expectations are for powder coatings to deliver a higher design life with better long-term colour and gloss retention.   Unfortunately, this means that they become more difficult to repair or re-paint with liquid.

The 800 Series paint is a twin-pack paint that is activated by a curing agent.   This is a non-isocyanate coating, so it is free from toxic hazards but still should be used in well-ventilated areas.  As a manufacturer, we can offer this paint in aerosol form.

Repainting an Asgard Shed - Conclusion:

A high-quality repaint of an existing Asgard shed is not possible. Well, not as a DIY job at a sensible price.  You can do it with very expensive paints or pay a professional to respray panel by panel.

We would recommend sticking with the standard paint finishes currently available from Asgard.
