How to keep your Garden Shed Cool

How to keep your shed cool in the summer

Metal Sheds in the hot weather

Asgard sheds are all Metal and so are super secure, tough, and weather resistant, but metal does get hot, that is the very nature of the product.  Preventing heat buildup in metal sheds, especially high-quality, thickly walled metal sheds like  Asgard sheds, can make a big difference in personal comfort and protecting the contents.

Here are a few practical tips to help keep your sheds cool in the hot weather:

Ventilation

All Asgard sheds come with built-in ventilation points. These have been designed into all of our products and help to reduce condensation by allowing airflow. inside the shed, evern when fully locked But, for extra hot environments, there is a lot more you can do to help keep your shed as cool as possible.

Toptips:

  • Keep vents clear: Make sure nothing is blocking them inside -  the more air flow, the better.

  • Open the doors occasionally: Let air circulate naturally when you're around in the garden.

  • General air flow – we always recommend plenty of space around the sheds to let the ventilation do its thing.

  • Don't store a really hot motorbike in a really hot shed on a really hot day ... it will.. get hot!

Shed Positioning & Shade

We do go on (and on) about positioning in all of our sheds in the assembly instructions, and there is good reason.  Plenty of room around the shed allows the ventilation system to work, so on cold days, the vents allow air flow and reduce internal condensation. On hot days, there is a similar principle: air flow is key.  A shed trapped tightly against a brick wall restricts air flow and the wall will absorb heat and pass it to / reflect back through to the shed and, so it will get hotter than a shed with plenty of room around it.

Toptips:

  • Place your shed in a shaded area to avoid direct midday sun—partial shade is ideal or near taller buildings, casting a shadow.

  • If you are out in the garden, open the doors every now and then.

Shed Contents:

Be realistic about what you can store in an outside building, don’t leave your rare chocolate bar collection in there – no matter how much insulation you use it WILL melt.

Toptips:

Don’t store any foodstuffs

Don’t store any rare or fragile items

If in doubt, always check on a regular basis and remove any vulnerable items

Insulation:

On our condensation page, we suggest using some cheap, easy-to-install insulation from a DIY store if you have had issues with condensation.  This cheap and easy method can also help with the heat.  An extra layer really helps to disperse the heat internally.  Here is an example of DIY shed insulation.  Where the customer has done wonders!

  • Consider some cheap insulation: Retailers such as Toolstation offer rolls of insulation for a few pounds, which can really help, but you must avoid blocking the internal vents.

  • Floor insulation: Asgard sheds have metal bases, which helps to control the internal environment. Adding one of the subfloor kits will also help to restrict heat.

Extras (Optional):

Toptips:

  • Battery-powered fans or solar ventilation kits can help if you're using the shed a lot during hot days.

  • Dehumidifiers: Useful for managing humidity as well as heat, especially in summer months.  Many Asgard sheds are designed ready to add power, so this is an easy win.
