Our latest installation took things to a new height: British astronaut Tim Peake needed a secure unit to house his family’s mountain bikes, and we were thrilled to deliver. Tim Peake, famed for being the first British ESA astronaut to visit the International Space Station, is equally at home on two wheels. The retired major and his family love outdoor adventures such as hiking and mountain biking. As Tim himself put it, “I love mountain biking, and my family does too… I wanted somewhere that was going to give dry, safe and secure storage, and this Asgard shed is amazing!” So when he needed a sturdy bike garage on solid ground, we knew exactly what would fit the mission.
An Astronaut with a Passion for Bikes
Tim Peake’s space career is legendary: 185 days in orbit, a historic 2015–16 mission aboard the ISS, and even a spacewalk under his belt. But when he’s not floating above Earth, he’s very much grounded in family life and adrenaline-fueled pursuits. Peake is an outdoorsman at heart. He spends time hiking, exploring, and having adventures with his wife and sons. Mountain biking is a favourite pastime, from trails in the UK to charity races. In his own words, “I’m going to fit four of my bikes in [the shed] – for me, my boys, my wife, with the equipment as well, so I can’t wait to get packing the shed and start using the bikes!” For a man who’s conquered space, a reliable, weather-resistant bike shelter was the obvious next project.
Why the Asgard Gladiator Cycle Store?
Tim chose our Gladiator Cycle Store x8, one of Asgard’s beefiest metal bike sheds, because it offers next-level security and space. This was no off-the-shelf lawnmower shed; the Gladiator is built from 18-gauge galvanised steel, weighs an astonishing 378 kg, and is 2.2 m wide with super-wide double-door access. Tim has room to maneuver inside and store up to 8 bikes if needed (he’s starting with four). The Gladiator comes with an integral metal base (that we bolted down on-site) and a heavy-duty ramp for easy loading. Inside the Gladiator four bike racks, universal hooks, shelves, and an LED motion-sensor light. Perfect for storing family bikes, helmets, pads, and repair gear in one spot.
Security is key. After all, these bikes are a prized part of Tim’s "earth suit" adventures. The Gladiator features a five-point locking system with a drill- and pick-resistant lock and 10 mm hardened deadbolts. Reinforced rear lock shroud, welded hinges, and internal deadbolt bars all help to reduce the risk of theft. It’s even Secured By Design (the police-preferred specification) and LPCB certified, so Tim can sleep easily knowing his bikes and equipment are as safe as possible. To keep condensation at bay, the shed has Asgard’s discreet ventilation system built into the roof and sides, reducing the risk of those expensive bike frames corroding (even in damp British weather!)
