The Addition Caravan Storage Box - A Brief History
How was the Access Bike Shed Designed?
The Access Bike Storage Shed was designed in 2010 by Neil Horne with a clear aim: to create a strong, secure and easy-to-use unit for up to four bikes.
As with all Asgard products, it was designed and built in-house using our own skills and machinery, allowing tight control over quality and the introduction of several innovative features. Manufactured from galvanised steel, the Access introduced a shrouded locking system to the market that allowed the use of two keyed-alike padlocks, so a single key operated both locks, a game changer for a homeowner.
As always I snaffled one of these and took it home to test it. I have to say it was faultless from day one – and I soon had it in from t of some professional cyclists and magazines and they loved it. Andy Heath
The integral metal floor was another major innovation; we had already included it on our other units, but again it’s a design that just keeps on giving. The integral floor delivered added strength and allowed the unit to be securely bolted to the ground, while roof stiffeners further reinforced the structure.
Over time, the design evolved as bikes became larger, with wider dimensions and increased height to accommodate electric models. Materials were upgraded too, including the addition of stainless steel locking points and lock shrouds to increase resistance to attack and long-term wear. We then introduced electrical points originally for charging lights, but they were perfect for e-bike storage.
“I was a club rider, and one guy bought an e-bike; I tried it… it was massive!!! So we started thinking about bigger bike sheds.” Andy Heath
From everyday cyclists to Olympic champions
The Access shed’s profile rose through its association with Team GB, and it has been used by multiple Olympic gold medallists, including Jason and Laura Kenny – which was really exciting for me as a club rider. – Andy Heath
Over the years, The Access has found its way into the homes of professional cyclists, photographers and film-industry professionals, plus some really famous footballers and managers…, reflecting its reputation for strength, security and a true British manufacturing heritage.
More than fifteen years on, it remains true to its original concept: a strong, secure storage solution built to protect valuable bikes properly – and I still have mine, no condensation, no problems at all - Andy
