Birmingham bids to become the next cycling city

Birmingham city council has unveiled plans for Birmingham to become the next cycling city. This new 20 year plan is aiming to change the face of Birmingham’s transportation system. The plan includes adding and expanding 20mph zones, creating segregated cycle routes and introducing their own cycle hire scheme. The focus of this plan is to concentrate on improving cyclist safety.

This is great news for the people of Birmingham, those living in the city who already cycle and also for those who have wanted to give cycling a try. However, other cities are competing for £10million in funds. Birmingham is one of many cities which are trying to increase and improve cycling infrastructure, since the London 2012 Olympics.

Britain saw a number of fantastic successes in cycling during London 2012 and this has really put cycling on the map. Because of this highlighted success, more and more people are choosing to get on their bikes, whether it is for commuting or general leisure and pressure is being put on local and central government to make cycling safer and more accessible for all.

Hopefully we will be seeing more and more cities taking such a positive approach towards cyclists.
