Tips for using your motorcycle this winter

Are you planning on using your motorcycle throughout the winter for the first time, but don’t know where to start? Riding in the winter can be just as enjoyable as the summer months as long as you are prepared and have the right equipment.  Using your motorbike during the winter can be particularly treacherous, so it is important to make sure you are properly prepared. Research has shown that almost half of Britain's motorcyclists say that riding on icy, winter roads is one of the worst aspects of motorcycling, so this is not to be taken lightly. Take a look at these top tips to help you keep safe.

Wrap up warm

This first tip is the most obvious, but investing in specialist winter riding gear can make a huge difference to your comfort.  Items such as one-piece leathers are a good idea, as they help to keep the icy chill out. You’ll also need a quality pair of gloves, there’s nothing worse than cold finger tips! There are a variety of waterproof, thermal gloves out there that will keep your hands nice and toasty.

Without the correct clothing, you could end up cold and wet before you know it which could cause you to lose concentration on the road.

Pay attention to the conditions

When the weather is bad, this is very important! Winter means rain, wind, snow and ice all things that can make riding conditions very difficult.  When riding in winter give yourself extra time to get to your destination, as trying to rush in these conditions isn’t advised.

Visibility

Bad winter weather means reduced visibility. You’ll need to be more alert and be aware of hazards as you ride. As a biker you’ll need to make sure you’re as visible to other road users, as possible. As the winter days are shorter and darker, wearing reflective clothing or an item of hi-vis is advisable as you will stand out more to other road users.

Motorcycle Maintenance

Give your motorcycle the once over and make sure everything is in good working order.  Also make sure you check your lights, tyre pressure and mirrors. You should also consider fitting winter tyres to your bike and don’t forget the anti-freeze!
