Making the most of your outdoor space at home

A blog from one of our loyal Asgard customers.

Most houses nowadays have multi-door access, a door at the front and at the side or back. My house has one on the side, and it’s putting my front door out of a job. My front door never gets opened, mainly because there’s no need for it to be opened because everything happens at the side. My bikes are secured in my bike shed behind a metal gate and wooden fencing, my outdoor council bins are there as they are hidden and easily dragged to the curb on collection days. So I propose to you this simple question. Is the side of your house the most useful bit of land you own?

There’s not a lot of room at the side of the average house, but many people have turned it into by far the most efficiently used bit of land they own (outside of the house). As it is usually the pathway to your back garden you want it to be aesthetic and tidy but is also the key way to getting in and out of your house. That’s why everything is placed in such an order to make my arrival at home as easy as possible.

Strategy is the key to efficiency. The last thing I need to be doing after a long and testing mountain bike run is to trail mud into my house. So my bike shed is placed perfectly to make it as easy as possible for me to lock my bike up and throw my muddy gear into it so I can clean it at a later time. My bike shed is also where I store the spare dog food and cleaning equipment. This frees up more room than you would think!

If you have a pet dog, you know that a gated garden is a must have. The gate at my house only makes things in my bike shed even safer. Sadly my chocolate Labrador isn’t the fiercest looking guard dog, unless you fear being licked to death, so every little way to make my house as safe as possible is a must!

At the end of the day, it all depends on how much space you have and what you can fit into it without it being too crowded. But one thing I can say is that you’d be surprised about how much you can actually fit into the small space. Adding storage facilities like a bike shed vastly improve not only how much you can store, but how safely it’s all secured.

I have to say buying my Asgard shed has made a huge difference, and in all honesty as tragic as it sounds the shed has transformed our way of living, and according to my estate agent friend has added plenty of value to my house!
