Cycling accidents hit a 5 year high in 2012

In 2012 the number of cycling fatalities reached a 5 year high, with 122 people losing their lives in a cycling accident.  The recent cycling boom is thought to have led to the increase in the number of cycling deaths, however this shouldn’t be seen as an excuse for the number of tragedies.

The youngest people killed on their bike were just 8 years old and the eldest was 94.

Out of the 122 deaths, 106 of them are known to have taken place due to a collision with a vehicle:

  • 61 Cars
  • 25 HGV’s
  • 10 Vans
  • 5 Buses
  • 3 Taxis
  • 2 Motorbikes

There have already been 8 cyclists killed on the roads. Please take care when cycling and remember drives don’t always check when they should, so cycle with an air of caution.
